Privacy policy
Readhum reads to you without reading about you. The text you listen to stays between your browser and the voice you choose. This page explains the little we do collect to sell you a license and keep it working.
The short version
- We never receive the pages, documents or text you listen to.
- Your voice-service API keys, settings and Reader library stay in your browser.
- We keep your account and license details so your purchase works, and payments are handled by Polar, our reseller.
- No advertising, no analytics trackers, and we never sell your data.
Who we are
Readhum is made and sold by Elision Web Solutions, 275 Main St, Webster, MA 01570, USA (“we”, “us”). For anything about your data, email [email protected]. For business and publisher enquiries, email [email protected].
What the extension does with your data
The text you listen to
Readhum finds the text on a page, or in a file you open in its Reader, inside your browser. To turn it into speech it sends that text only to the voice you pick, never to us:
- Built-in voices are provided by your browser or operating system. Most run on your computer; some, such as Chrome’s “Google” voices, are processed online by their provider.
- Your own server (for example Kokoro) receives the text at the address you set in Settings.
- ElevenLabs receives the text directly from your browser, using your own API key, under ElevenLabs’ privacy policy.
What stays in your browser
Your settings, voice-service API keys, Reader library (the documents you add and where you stopped) and any audio you export are stored in your browser’s extension storage. We can’t see them, and uninstalling Readhum removes them.
License checks
When you enter your license key, the extension sends the key, a random device ID it creates for that browser, the extension version and a short device name (like “Chrome on Windows”) to our license server. It checks again about once a day so refunds and device changes take effect. Nothing about what you read is included.
What we collect on readhum.com
- Your account: email address, name, and a securely hashed password. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and Google account ID.
- Your license: the license key, when it was bought or granted, how long it includes new features, and the browsers it’s active on (device ID, device name, first and last check).
- Your purchases: Polar tells us the order number, email address, product, price, country and whether it was refunded. We never receive your card details.
- Support: the emails you send us and our replies.
- Security logs: IP address, browser type and time of requests to our servers, used to stop abuse such as guessing license keys. Kept for up to 30 days.
- Cookies: only the ones needed to keep you signed in. No analytics or advertising cookies.
Why we use it
- To sell you Readhum, deliver your license and let you manage it (needed to perform our contract with you).
- To keep the service secure and stop license keys being shared or abused (our legitimate interest).
- To keep the records that tax and accounting law require (a legal obligation).
- To answer you when you write to us.
We only send you product news if you ask for it, and every such email lets you unsubscribe.
Who we share it with
We don’t sell or rent personal data. We use a few providers who process it for us:
- Polar (polar.sh) sells Readhum on our behalf as merchant of record: it takes the payment, handles sales tax and refunds, and has its own privacy policy for the payment details you give it.
- Our email provider, to send your license key, receipts and sign-in emails.
- Our hosting provider, whose servers run readhum.com and the license server.
- Google, only if you choose to sign in with Google.
We may also disclose data if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and license while your account exists. If you delete your account we remove your personal data within 30 days, except purchase records we must keep for tax and accounting, which we keep only as long as the law requires. Security logs are deleted after 30 days.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it, by emailing [email protected]. We’ll answer within 30 days. If you’re unhappy with our answer you can complain to your local data protection authority. We do not sell or share personal information as defined by California law.
Chrome Web Store
The use of information received from the Readhum extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Children
Readhum isn’t intended for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If we change this policy we’ll update the date at the top, and for important changes we’ll email customers before they take effect. Questions: [email protected]. Purchases from Readhum are also covered by our terms.
